If somebody were to ask you what your favourite shop in Bilbao was, what would you say to them?
Open, wide open… to you, to Bilbao.
To you and me, to meeting one another, to making you feel right at home, to giving you the very best and to taking good care of you. Open to special things, local things, home-made things, and, as always, to letting you have a few good tips! Discover Bilbao’s favourites!
TRADITION WITH AN EYE ON THE FUTURE: GERARDO
Quality, service and exclusivity. This iconic shop has been dressing the good people of Biscay since 1949, initially in the Casco Viejo – it was located on the ground floor of the Arriaga Theatre – and then, since 1961, in the Indautxu neighbourhood. The third generation of the family joined the business in 1998: Gerardo Pedrosa, who has remained faithful to the essence of the company, offering fashion of the highest quality, exclusivity, excellent service and reliability.
HEMENGO SHOPPING: CALZADOS ALONSO
A classic shoe shop. Dressing the people of Bilbao from the feet up since 1940, always offering the very best in men’s footwear. Alonso’s loyal customers know where to go for quality, price and personalised advice. The corner of Calle Colón de Larreategui and Calle Astarloa has been known as Alonso’s Corner for over 80 years. They work almost exclusively with national brands, following the trends and adding a few special items.
Since 1940.
BETTER CONNECTED: LULÚ MARTINÉS
Jewellery and accessories chosen with tender loving care. Lulú Martinés is a small shop in the city centre. Crossing the threshold of this magical place is like entering a world where accessories take centre stage: costume jewellery, bags, scarves, signature perfumes… Lulú is run by Ainhoa, who always has a smile on her face and is more than willing to advise you on how to personalise your look. The shop’s display cases combine more classic pieces with other more contemporary trends, but always jewellery lovingly selected from different parts of the world.
HEMENGO JAN: ALL NATURAL
Quality, locally sourced, organic food. Quality is the name of the game in this organic grocery store. All Natural offers a selection of 100% natural vegetables from our baserris, but in addition to fresh produce, it also has a varied food section where you will find the best preserves, vegetables, oils, breads, teas… and sweets! The gourmet delicatessen and the splendid wine cellar are well worth mentioning.
THE BEST CATERING CONCEPT: WAMAN RESTAURANT
All the flavours of Andean cuisine combined with seasonal Basque produce. To enter Waman is to embark on a journey through Peruvian gastronomy. The restaurant serves haute cuisine based on the country’s traditional recipes prepared with seasonal local produce and adapted to local tastes. A fusion cuisine whose flavours and creativity have won over the most demanding palates. Within a few months of opening its doors, the Michelin Guide recommended chef Gabriel Huaman’s proposal and rumour has it that it won’t be long before he is awarded a star. In the meantime, his cuisine continues to gain popularity and rave reviews.
A BOOST FOR THE BASQUE COUNTRY: GANBOA
Contemporary Jewellery. Ganboa is a signature jewellery workshop where Maitena creates each piece by hand in full view of anyone who happens to drop in. Maitena is passionate about mixing materials, textures and different techniques to create unique, exclusive and truly one-of-a-kind jewellery that sparkles with personality and leaves a mark on both the creator and the wearer. Nature is her source of inspiration and her pieces are characterised by their organic shapes.
NEW SHOP: IGNACIO GOITIA ART STORE
The shop with the most art in the city. A former jewellery shop now houses the work of Ignacio Goitia. The universe of our most iconic and international artist inspires pieces of fashion – his famous scarves – and decoration such as tableware, wallpaper, carpets, lampshades… so that we can delight in his art in our daily lives. All of this can be found in this art store, as well as graphic works. A must for anyone who loves beauty. The shop’s online store ships all over the world.
PUBLIC AWARD: LA COSTURA HABERDASHERY
Not just a haberdashery of today and always, but also an influencer! Specialising in buttons and passementerie, this shop is the place to go for all the latest trends for your needlework and to personalise your clothes. Mercería La Costura is the story of Esperanza’s life and that of her daughter-in-law, Anaïs, who now runs the shop. She has used social networks to reach out to a younger audience with her suggestions and tips, just as they have always done in this shop in Santutxu for almost 40 years.
